Breast implants vary in size and shape and are composed of a silicone elastomer (rubber) shell. In addition, implants can be filled with either saline or silicone gel. Saline filled implants utilized by Dr. Lucas, are Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for the general public. The American Society of Plastic Surgery in conjunction with the two implant manufacturers worked with the Food and Drug Administration to conduct scientifically controlled studies of silicone gel implants and the conclusions were that silicone gel implants are a safe and effective device for both aesthetic and reconstructive breast procedures. The FDA approved these devices in November of 2006. Dr. Lucas was one of the co-investigators who provided much needed data to support these conclusions. Dr Lucas utilizes both silicone and saline implants to meet patient's individual needs.
The American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) has a long history and interest in the safety for women who make the personal choice for breast augmentation. Much effort has been dedicated to the study of breast implants over time with the risks, the benefits and long term safety of these devices. ASPS and Dr. Lucas feel strongly that breast implants are safe and effective for the general population.
